Marcy and Mel Balaguer grew up in New York City and met while attending Fordham University in 1956. After dating for two years, they married the day after graduation and the day before Mel began his Army career. Military service brought them to North Carolina, Oklahoma, El Paso, New Jersey, Greenland, Baltimore, Hawaii, Vietnam, Chicago, Germany, and finally back to New Jersey. Along the way they raised three children, Ellen, Paul, and Mark, all graduates of CU. Throughout their childhood and young adult lives, the three siblings grew up understanding the sacrifices made to optimize their educations despite the challenges of so many moves. This commitment to education is a family tradition.

Mel and Marcy were incredibly fortunate to enjoy a long and exceptionally happy marriage. Their most important legacy was their commitment to each other and to their family. They instilled in their children and grandchildren the importance of recognizing their good fortune and pursuing their goals ethically.

Since talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not, the Mel and Marcy Balaguer Scholarship was established to give economically and socially disadvantaged students the opportunity to get a high-quality business education. This scholarship is dedicated in honor of our parents who gave up so much to provide for us.
